Cookie Policy

What is stored in your browser on Beneath today, what third parties use when advertising is enabled, and how to control it.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files a website can store in your browser. Beneath also uses your browser's local storage, which works in a similar way but stays on your device.

This page describes only the technologies that actually run on Beneath today, and says plainly where something is not yet active.

Essential storage

Reading Beneath requires no cookies and no account. A session cookie is set only when the publisher signs in to the private studio; it is what keeps that login working and is deleted when the session ends.

A small value in your browser's local storage remembers your position in the discovery feed so you can carry on where you stopped. It never leaves your device.

Analytics cookies

No analytics cookies are set on Beneath at present. If an analytics service is enabled later, this page will name it and the relevant cookies before they are used.

Advertising cookies

Beneath does not currently set or allow any advertising cookies: advertising is switched off. When it is enabled, Google AdSense and its partners may set cookies to select, measure and limit advertising, and this page will say so before any advertising appears.

Third-party technologies

Some stories embed a YouTube video. The player loads only after you press play; when it loads, Google and YouTube may set cookies and receive your IP address, under YouTube's own policies.

Stories can also link out to documents and data hosted by other organisations. Those sites set their own cookies.

Managing your choices

You can block or delete cookies through your browser's settings; blocking essential cookies will stop the studio sign-in from working, but reading is unaffected.

You can opt out of personalised advertising through Google Ads Settings, or opt out of participating vendors' use of cookies for personalisation through aboutads.info, and in the EU/UK through youronlinechoices.com.

Where a consent prompt applies to you, it will include a way to revisit your choice later.

Changes to this policy

If a new cookie or third-party technology is introduced — for example by enabling analytics or advertising — this page will be updated before it starts running.
