Terms of Use

Short, readable and deliberately unaggressive: what you may do with our stories, and where we stand on accuracy and liability.

Using Beneath

Beneath is free to read. By using this site you agree to these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.

You agree not to interfere with the site, attempt to gain access to parts of it that are restricted to the publisher, send automated requests that disrupt it, or use it for anything unlawful.

Who owns the content

The articles, photography, graphics, page designs and films published on Beneath are owned by Eric Snead or used under licence, and are protected by copyright.

Third-party material — quotations, documents, data and embedded video — remains the property of its original owners.

What you may do

You may read, print or save stories for your own personal, non-commercial use, share links to any story, and quote short extracts with clear credit to Beneath and a link back to the original story.

What you may not do

You may not republish or redistribute whole stories or substantial parts of them, reuse our photography or videos, scrape or bulk-copy the site, remove attribution, present our work as your own, or use our content to build or train products, datasets or language models, without our written permission.

Requests for syndication or republication can be sent through the contact form.

Advertising and sponsorship

Some pages may display advertising. Advertising is always labelled and kept visually separate from editorial content, and it never influences which stories we publish or how they are reported.

Advertising is not currently enabled on Beneath. If it is switched on, it will be labelled wherever it appears.

Where a story is produced with a commercial partner it carries a visible disclosure at the top, for example: “Sponsored story. Produced with a commercial partner; editorial decisions remain with Beneath.”

Links to other sites

We link to sources, documents and videos hosted elsewhere. Those sites are outside our control and have their own terms; following a link does not mean we endorse what you find there.

Accuracy and limitation of liability

We work to be accurate and to correct mistakes when they are pointed out, but we publish on a best-efforts basis. Stories are general information for curious readers — they are not legal, financial, medical or professional advice, and they are not a substitute for your own research.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the publisher is not liable for loss arising from reliance on what you read here, from the site being unavailable, or from the acts of third-party services linked from it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Availability and changes

We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the site, and may update these terms. Material changes will be reflected in the date below. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
